The Office of the Counsel supports York University's mission and priorities by handling all legal matters generated by the activities of the University and its faculties, schools, departments and administrative units.
The Office provides strategic legal advice to the University administration at all levels, and works with administrators to develop policies and procedures that protect the University from undue liability. The Office also assists with risk assessment and control. To further this aspect of its mandate, the Counsel’s Office provides seminars and other education-oriented initiatives on legal issues affecting the University.
The Office of the Counsel retains, instructs and oversees external legal counsel on behalf of the University to maintain quality service. The Office also manages the costs of legal services so as to maximize the value of the University’s expenditures and limit risk.
